Signs Your Linear Keypad or Intercom Is Failing
- Keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the keypad is sending a signal, but the relay in the keypad or the receiver at the operator has failed. We see this most often after a Texas thunderstorm when lightning rides the low-voltage line.
- One button stopped working, then two, then three. The membrane contacts under the keypad face wear unevenly from repeated use, especially on the numbers used most. There’s no field fix for a worn membrane; the keypad face gets replaced.
- Intercom rings the house but the voice is garbled or silent. The microphone or speaker on the entry panel has corroded, or the amplifier circuit on the intercom board is dying. North Texas heat accelerates both, and we replace more intercom boards in August than any other month.
- The keypad looks foggy or fills with water after rain. The gasket behind the faceplate has dried and cracked. Once water gets to the circuit board, the repair window closes fast.
